Why the NHS Is Failing — And How It Can Be Fixed
Earlier this year, I met with the Deputy CEO of a major hospital in the UK. It quickly became clear why parts of the NHS are struggling.
It’s not funding. It’s not resources.
It’s leadership.
Decisions were pushed into a 20-person committee. The result?
No accountability. No progress. Just inertia.
Meanwhile, frontline staff, the nurses, porters, catering teams, those carrying the system every day, had little to no voice.
So, when engagement drops, burnout rises, and patient care suffers… the response is more meetings.
This isn’t a funding crisis. It’s a cultural one.
And it’s being made worse by resistance to change. Technology and AI are still seen by some as a threat, rather than what they truly are: a powerful opportunity.
Because the future of healthcare leadership should look very different:
• Real-time employee voice
• AI identifying burnout before it happens
• Recognition that drives motivation
• Data-led decisions, not guesswork
• Frontline staff shaping strategy
This isn’t theory. It’s already happening.
But it requires something simple and rare:
Courage.
Courage to listen.
Courage to act.
Courage to lead differently.
The NHS is full of incredible people. They deserve better systems, better leadership, and better support.
The solution isn’t more layers.
It’s connection, empowerment, and smarter use of technology.
Only then will we see real change.
